Stoves, one of the UK’s largest cooking brands, launched a national campaign last year to call for a standard 'Made in
Britain' marque to be applied to all products manufactured in the UK.
This came after research uncovered widespread confusion amongst consumers about
Made in Britain goods. The findings revealed that half of UK consumers are baffled
when it comes to buying ‘British’, two-thirds (67%) want an official seal of approval
to show products made in Britain and the majority (52%) think British brands should
bring manufacturing back to the UK.
Following this call from the public Stoves launched a national competition amongst UK
university design students and asked them to create a logo which could be used as
a standard marque. Hundreds of entries were received, but with the help of a judging
panel of industry experts, Stoves unveiled the winning design by Cynthia
Lee from Nottingham University. To date, the campaign has received national press coverage, backing from prominent
MPs - including Labour leader Ed Miliband (March 2012) - and UK manufacturers and the research findings have even been debated in the
House of Commons.
